Some officials of the Nigeria Prisons Service Benin City, Edo State have landed in hot soup as two prisoners escaped doing menial labour in the state capital.
Consequently, prison officials yesterday launched a man-hunt to apprehend the inmates.Â
They were said to have been working in a moat close to the prison comptroller’s office.
According to information gathered by our correspondent, trouble started when the officials left the prisoners at work and went off, probably to get something sorted out. The inmates had pulled off their prison uniforms and ran into a nearby bush.
The embattled warders had then began a manhunt, searching within the precinct of NUJ, Benin Motel Plaza, High Court and Doctors Quarter all located within the precincts of the incident.
The officials were also said to have extended the search to brothels known to be hide out for criminal elements. Â
Our correspondent learnt that  when the warders on guard were engaged in a conversation only to discover that the inmates had escaped.Â
Some residents around the area were said to have sighted a naked man running along the street in a manner that portray him as a demented lunatic scaring people as he paved way for his escape.Â
When contacted, the spokesman of the NPS, Mr Aminu Suleiman said he could not confirm nor deny the information.
According to him ” I am not in the office now and as such I cannot tell you if it is true or not.
” I will speak to you on this after getting information on it upon my return to the office.”
