In a bid to attract sponsorship and improve visibility of women’s football in Nigeria, the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership will begin weekly broadcast of one’star’ league match.
Samuel Ahmadu, the Media Director, NWFL, said in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja that the league season, which is expected to kick off on Wednesday, would see the game between defending champions Edo Queens and Abia Angels televised live on NTA24 and StarTimes.
Ahmadu quoted Nkechi Obi, the NWFL Chairperson, as saying that the development was a testament to the board’s dedication to innovation and growth of the game.
“The live broadcasts and floodlight matches debuting this season is a step towards making the NWFL a household name across Nigeria and beyond.
“This season, fans can expect weekly star matches on TV, showcasing the incredible talent we have in women’s football and in connecting with fans.
“Our goal is to inspire and attract the support needed to elevate the game to new heights.
“It is also to enhance the league’s visibility, attract investment, and inspire a new generation of female footballers,” Obi said.
She said that the NWFL was committed to building a commercially viable and globally recognised league as well as setting a new benchmark for women’s football in Africa.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a total of 16 teams, grouped into two, will jostle for honours in the new league season.
The league will begin on Wednesday with matches across various stadiums in the country. (NAN)
