Wife of the Anambra Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, says compassion remains one of society’s strongest forces for healing and unity, especially during periods of hardship and humanitarian crises.
She said such situations required collective responsibility, sacrifice, care and sustained support from citizens to assist vulnerable persons and strengthen social harmony across communities.
Mrs Soludo stated this in a statement issued Friday in Awka to commemorate the 2026 World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, themed “United in Humanity,” celebrated annually worldwide on May 8 by humanitarian organizations.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that World Red Cross Day honors the movement’s founder, Henry Dunant, while recognizing volunteers and workers promoting humanity and helping prevent suffering among vulnerable people globally each year.
She said, “On this World Red Cross Day, we are reminded that compassion remains one of the greatest forces for healing and unity.”
Soludo urged citizens to embrace humanity through service and kindness always.
“From disaster response to healthcare support and crucial humanitarian interventions, the Red Cross continues to stand for compassion, dignity and service to humanity,” she said, commending humanitarian workers supporting vulnerable populations during emergencies nationwide.
The governor’s wife lauded members of the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the global International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement for their courage, compassion and selfless service to people affected by humanitarian crises worldwide.
According to her, the sacrifices and commitment demonstrated by humanitarian organizations continue providing hope, relief and assistance to people facing difficult circumstances, emergencies and disasters in different communities across the country and beyond.
Soludo urged residents to embrace the spirit of humanity by extending love, care and support to vulnerable persons, stressing that collective compassion remained essential toward building safer and more resilient communities for everyone nationwide.
She added that collective efforts by governments, organizations and individuals would strengthen humanitarian responses and help create a compassionate society where citizens feel protected, valued and secure in spite of prevailing social and economic challenges.(NAN)
