ABEOKUTA, Ogun State ā A final-year student of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Itori, Ogun State, has been killed during an armed robbery attack in Eruku Community, Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state.
The victim, an HND II Marketing student, was reportedly shot during the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, according to reports from the area.
Three other students were also reportedly injured during the incident. One of the injured students sustained a severe ear injury, while another suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, for treatment.
The attack reportedly affected about 15 residential buildings in the Eruku Community, an area largely occupied by students of the polytechnic.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of students living in communities surrounding tertiary institutions.
Following the killing, aggrieved students of the institution took to the streets to protest the worsening security situation around the school and its host community.
The protesters blocked the LagosāAbeokuta Expressway, causing significant traffic disruption and leaving motorists stranded for several hours.
The students called on the Ogun State Government and security agencies to take urgent measures to improve security in the area and prevent further attacks on students.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) also condemned the killing and called for improved security around tertiary institutions and their host communities.
The Rector of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Dr. Goke Rafiu, confirmed the incident, stating that one student died while three others sustained injuries during the attack.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger collaboration between tertiary institution management, host communities and security agencies to protect students and ensure that they can live and study without fear of criminal attacks.
