As part of efforts to strengthen public transportation in Lagos, seven new high capacity boats have been added to the fleet of the State Ferry Service, Lagferry.
This brings the total number of commercial boats operated by the state government to twenty and one cargo barge.
An e-payment model called Cowry card to be used for water transportation was also launched to encourage cashless economy.
Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said the development was aimed at giving residents a variety of transportation options and make commuting easier and faster.
In an address of welcome, the Managing Director of Lagferry, Mr. Abdulbaqi Ladi-Balogun, stated that the boats were constructed locally in Lagos and Warri in Delta state.
He said the objective was to ensure that thirty percent of Lagosians are transported through the waterways to decongest the roads.
The new boats will be deployed to the new routes of Epe, Badagry, Agbowa-Ikosi, UNILAG Community and Agbara-Ijanikin.
