Sir Ahmadu Bello Foundation celebrates 25 years of democracy in Nigeria
The Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation says it is commemorating Nigeria’s unbroken years of democracy from 1999 to date.
According to the foundation, it is also marking a significant milestone of 25 years of uninterrupted multi-party democratic rule since 1999.
This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Abubakar Umar, Director-General of the foundation, issued on Monday in Kaduna.
Umar said that the celebration acknowledged the establishment of democratic institutions that have allowed the citizens to actively participate in the electoral process
He said,” The foundation expresses both pride in this democratic achievement and concern over persistent issues within the system.
“We take delight in the fact that democratic institutions have become firmly established, allowing citizens to actively participate in democratic processes, particularly through elections.”
According to Umar, reflecting on the past 25 years, the foundation noted that the expected benefits of democracy have not been fully realized.
The foundation emphasized the need for comprehensive reassessment and stock-taking to address the shortcomings.
Umar also called for the political space to be opened for full citizens’ participation and for the judicial processes to be protected from political interference.
“Leaders must demonstrate transparency and accountability, placing the interests of the people at the center of politics rather than serving themselves,” he urged.
The foundation highlighted the importance of a clear separation of powers among the various arms of government to prevent undue interference and ensure checks and balances necessary for a thriving democracy.
“The judiciary must be independent and free from any form of political influence, allowing it to uphold the rule of law and protect the rights of citizens,” Umar stressed.
The foundation also called on Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable for their policies, actions, and decisions.
It encouraged citizens to be more politically active and aware, to exercise their right to full political participation, and to engage in constructive dialogues to shape the nation’s future.
“It is through active citizenship that we can collectively bring about the necessary changes and foster a more inclusive and prosperous society,” Umar added..
He said, ”The foundation joins all Nigerians in marking 25 years of unbroken democratic rule, with a hopeful vision for a more robust and participatory democracy in the years to come.” (NAN)
