Survey Exonerates TCN and Tinubu’s Administration in National Grid Collapse
A recent three-week survey conducted by electricity experts sheds light on the persistent breakdown of Nigeria’s national grid, laying the blame on the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, according to findings released on Tuesday.
The survey, which included responses from 1,000 individuals aged between 35 and 60 in key cities across the six geo-political zones, pointed fingers at the administrations of Obasanjo and former President Goodluck Jonathan. The respondents attributed the grid collapses primarily to the absence of a strong will, incessant politics, and the activities of existing cartels.
“It’s clear that the decisions made during the Obasanjo era, coupled with subsequent administrations, have led to the current crisis,” stated one respondent.
While some respondents acknowledged the challenges faced by the present administration, they emphasised the need for support for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), particularly in revamping infrastructure and combating corruption within the sector.
“In cities like Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, and Maiduguri, respondents emphasised the efforts of TCN in addressing the crisis,” said one respondent, advocating for increased funding and support for the agency.
Criticism was also directed towards the National Assembly for what respondents perceived as a failure to fulfil oversight responsibilities adequately. Many called for transparency and accountability in the allocation of funds for infrastructure development.
“The National Assembly must take responsibility and prioritise the stabilisation of electricity supply,” remarked one respondent.
The survey findings come amidst ongoing criticism and scrutiny of TCN’s management by social critics and observers. However, the survey results indicate a broader acknowledgment of systemic issues that have plagued Nigeria’s energy sector for years, with hopes pinned on targeted interventions to address the root causes of the crisis.
