Dr. Danladi Idrisa, the Programme Officer, UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in
Adamawa, has urged the state government to create budget for successful implementation of the
Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act.

Idrisa gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola on Wednesday.

He said the implementation of the law would succeed only if it had a budget and the involvement of Civil
Society Organizations and communities.

He added that “without a budget and community engagement, it will be difficult to achieve the objectives of the VAPP Act.

“It is the primary responsibility of government to ensure that every police station and police officer is aware of the VAPP Act,
and to stay within the ethics and values so that survivors can freely access services and perpetrators punished.

“Government should gazette the Act and ensure it is in the 2022 budget for smooth implementation.”

The programme officer also called on traditional leaders to change their attitude over harmful practices against women and girls in the society and prioritize girl-child education in their respective domains.

According to him, another important part of the law is that survivors have the right to access compensation, services and care in a confidential manner.

He further urged the Gender Based Violence (GBV) subsector to sustain campaigns and awareness creation and the existence of the
VAPP Act beyond the annual celebration of the 16 days of Activism to bring the menace to an end in Adamawa. (NAN)
