The police on Wednesday dragged a woman, Sunday Mariam, before an Akure Magistrates’ Court for allegedly converting the sum of ₦3.1 million belonging to one Hassan Similoluwa.
The defendant, whose age and address were not stated is standing trial on a two-count charge of illegal conversion and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.
She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Mr Nelson Akintimeyin, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in 2024 at about 8:00 a.m. at Adegbola Street, Akure.
Akintimeyin alleged that the defendant converted to her personal use, the sum of ₦3.1 million, belonging to the complainant.
The prosecutor also alleged that the defendant, on the same date conducted herself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace by “raining” abusive words on the complainant.
The offences contravene the provisions of sections 249(d), 383(2)(d), and 390(8)(b)(9), of the Criminal Law of Ondo State 2006.
The Magistrate, Mr Adedapo Sunday, questioned the defendant on her means of livelihood, and she told the court that she sells egusi (melon).
The defendant added that the money in question was a loan she took from the complainant, adding that she had been paying ₦90,000 weekly but the interest was becoming unbearable for her.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦750,000 with one surety in like sum.
He held that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, and must possess a traceable address, with means of livelihood.
He ordered that all documents must be verified by the court.
The court adjourned the case until June 22, for an update on settlement or for hearing. (NAN)
