The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) on Friday organized a two-kilometer awareness walk and donated relief items to Kano Children’s Home, commemorating 2026 World Trafficking day.
The exercise was conducted in collaboration with the Network against Child Trafficking, Abuse and Labor (NACTAL), the Kano State Task Force, and the Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs, Children and Persons with Special Needs.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the awareness walk commenced from the Ministry of Women Affairs and terminated at the Children’s Home in Nasarawa.
Speaking during the event, the Director-General of NAPTIP, Hajiya Binta Lami-Adamu, said the donation was part of the agency’s commitment to supporting vulnerable women and children.
Lami-Adamu, represented by the Kano Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, Barr. Abdullahi Babale, said the agency would continue to intensify public enlightenment and strengthen measures to combat human trafficking across the country.
She urged parents and guardians to discourage their children and wards from embarking on irregular migration in search of greener pastures, noting that such ventures often expose them to trafficking and exploitation.
The relief materials presented to the home included wrappers, toiletries, shoes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, locally made mats, combs and tissue paper.
In her remarks, the Kano State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Amina Sani-Abdullahi, lauded NAPTIP for the gesture and its sustained advocacy against human trafficking.
The commissioner, represented by the Acting Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Alhaji Mohammed Sambo, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to partnering with NAPTIP and other stakeholders to curb human trafficking.
She also said the government was working towards harmonizing the state’s Penal Code with the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) (VAPP) Law to strengthen legal protection for women, children and other vulnerable groups. (NAN).
