The Yobe House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the Federal Government, development partners and well-meaning Nigerians to provide assistance to victims of recent flood disaster in Damaturu Local Government.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of Urgent Public Importance sponsored by the member representing Damaturu II Constituency, Buba Kalallawa, during Wednesday’s plenary.
Kalallawa, while presenting the motion said the flood affected several communities, including Dikumari, Malam Matari, Maduri, Malari and Pompomari.
He said the disaster claimed two lives, displaced many residents and destroyed property worth millions of naira.
The lawmaker expressed concern over the plight of the victims, noting that many families had lost their homes and means of livelihood.
Kalallawa, however, commended the Yobe Government for its prompt intervention through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
He described the response as timely and instrumental in alleviating the hardship faced by the affected communities.
The House Leader, Nasiru Yusuf, contributing to the debate, urged the contractor handling the ongoing drainage expansion project in Damaturu to expedite work to minimize the risk of future flooding.
The Speaker of the House, Chiroma Mashio, who presided over the session, condoled with the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster and prayed for the repose of their souls.
Mashio also prayed for God to grant the bereaved families the fortitude to bear the loss. (NAN).
