Yuletide: NEMA partner FRSC, others to prevent road crashes in Sokoto

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Nigerian Red Cross Society has inaugurated operation Eagle -Eye, to prevent road crashes during the festive season.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the three-week exercise was inaugurated by the Sokoto State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr Kabiru Yusuf-Nadabo, on Friday in Sokoto.

Mr Tukur Abubakar, Head of Planning, Research and Statics, NEMA Operational Office Sokoto, representing the Zonal Head, Mr Aliyu Kafindangi, said the exercise would be implemented with Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

Abubakar said the collaborating agencies were relevant stakeholders in disaster management, adding that the efforts were aimed at safeguarding people’s live as properties.

According to him, the campaign will create awareness among the motorists and other road users on safety measures to avert road accidents.

“The operation, an annual event is aimed at sensitising and creating awareness for motorists on the highways, motor parks and other sensitive areas.

“It is being organised during peak period of mass travelling to reduce the rate of speeding, overloading and reckless driving,” Abubakar said.

Earlier, Yusuf-Nadabo warned motorists against violating traffic regulations while driving, adding the act may jeopardise traffic flow and expose other road users to risks.

The FRSC sector commander urged drivers to shun alcoholism and intoxicants as well as imbibe use of seat belt and adhere to speed limit to ensure safety on the road.

He reiterated the readiness of the  command to always enforce traffic rules, adding that the combined team of personnel would be deployed to strategic areas to ensure accident-free yuletide in the state.

Yusuf-Nadabo said members of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other stakeholders were also included the exercise. (NAN)
