Senator Ned Nwoko Sponsors Bill for Civilian Firearm Ownership

Abuja, January 6, 2024: Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, has urged for a legal framework allowing civilians in Nigeria to bear arms for self-defence amidst the continuous attacks by bandits and terrorists across the nation. Expressing concern over the persistent massacre of innocent citizens, Nwoko revealed that he had introduced a bill to amend existing laws on civilian firearm ownership with the aim of empowering individuals to protect themselves during unprovoked attacks by criminal elements.

In a statement made on Friday in Abuja, the lawmaker conveyed his optimism that the bill would receive approval when Senators resume legislative activities after the new year break. Nwoko emphasized the need for civilians to be equipped to defend themselves in light of the ongoing insecurity despite the government’s efforts.

Describing recent violent attacks in Plateau communities resulting in the death of over 200 people and numerous injuries as a ‘disturbing moment,’ Nwoko highlighted the bill’s objective to empower civilians against criminals.

He stated, “Considering these dire circumstances, there’s a growing call for responsible firearm ownership as a means of self-defence.” Nwoko disclosed that the bill had been laid and would be read for the first time when the Senators resume from the new year recess, underscoring its urgency and significance.

“I am pleased that the topic has gained national significance, sparking diverse opinions and discussions that predominantly fall into two camps – one in opposition and the other in support,” Nwoko remarked. He pointed out that the existing security measures had not proven sufficient in safeguarding communities, and allowing law-abiding citizens to possess firearms could potentially provide a sense of security and a means to protect themselves and their families.

Nwoko emphasized the responsibility and stringent regulations that would accompany the move to permit civilians to bear firearms, including comprehensive training on their proper use. The proposed bill addresses a pressing issue that has ignited national debate on the balance between individual rights and collective security in the face of rising threats.
