Cleaner docked over alleged possession of dangerous weapons

A 32-year-old cleaner, David Titus, was on Tuesday arraigned in  a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, for unlawful possession of dangerous weapons.

The police charged Titus with criminal conspiracy and unlawful possession of dangerous weapons.

The Prosecution Counsel, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that a vigilante group arrested the defendant while on patrol on the Abuja Junction, Kaduna  road on May 20.

According to Leo, at about 11:30pm on May 20, the defendant and three others, at large conspired and armed themselves with cutlasses, hammers, axes and knives.

Leo said that the defendant and his accomplices went to a viewing centre located at Goni-gora Kaduna, without provocation, destroyed the entrance glass door.

He further stated that they also threatened the people who tried to stop them during the destruction.

He said that the defendant was arrested and during interrogation, he confessed to the crime.

Leo said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 59 and 312 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State 2017.

“Section 312 stipulates five years’ jail term for possession of dangerous weapon.

The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Ibrahim Emmanuel admitted Titus to bail in the sum of N200,000 and two surety in like sum.

Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must show ownership of a house, utility bill, a valid National ID card and must submit two passport photographs.

He further ordered that the sureties must present evidence of three years tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.

He adjourned the case until June 21 for hearing.(NAN)
