ADC candidate unveils “Umunna” model for Anambra governorship election

Dr. Akachukwu Nwankpo, African Democratic Congress’s (ADC) candidate for the Nov. 6 governorship election in Anambra plans to adopt the “Umunna’’ governance model if elected.

“Umunna’’ is a home-grown kindred-based cultural system popular in the southeast of the country.

Nwankpo’s Director, Media and Strategy, Dr. Harris Chuma-Odili, said on Wednesday in Awka that the candidate would adopt the system for inclusiveness and wellbeing of the majority.

He made the declaration at the unveiling of the “Umunna Revolution’’ which the candidate planned to implement if elected as governor.

He explained that the “Umunna’’ model encouraged the inclusion of households in governance instead of the present system where people must know those in power to benefit from governance.

He said the model aimed at taking governance to the grassroots and further down to every family for equal treatment.

“About 1.6 million people have been registered for the model. The concept will also act as panacea to address growing insecurity because the system touches every fabric of the society.

“If we can reduce misery to five per cent in one year through the “Umunna Revolution’’, be rest assured that crime will also reduce to that level.

“While people say devolve power to the states or to regions, ADC in Anambra is saying devolve governance to “Umunna’’.

“We are optimistic that by the time it begins to yield positive results in Anambra, a lot more states will adopt the model,’’ he said.

Also speaking, Chief Ralph Nwosu, National Chairman of APC, said “Umunna’’ type of democracy would strengthen the family system and reduce the challenges of individualism.

Nwosu expressed worry over the air of insecurity surrounding the election in Anambra.

He called for a political solution between leaders of the Southeast and the Federal Government with regards to the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra.

He said his continued detention was heightening tension in the Southeast while urging the agitators to toe the path of peace as the region could not afford a crisis. (NAN).
