Amman, Jordan – January 7, 2024: In an effort to contain the Israel-Hamas conflict and address the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Amman on Saturday evening as part of his Middle East tour.
The conflict, initiated on October 7 with a unprecedented attack by Gaza-based Hamas militants on Israel, has led to intense retaliatory bombardments by Israel, leaving Gazans in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
During his visit to Jordan, Blinken is expected to hold crucial meetings with King Abdullah II. In a meeting with Jordan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi, Blinken emphasized the immediate need to cease the aggression, protect civilians in Gaza, and provide essential humanitarian and medical aid to all affected areas, according to a statement from the foreign ministry.
Seeking to increase aid to the besieged Gaza Strip, Blinken visited the World Food Programme’s regional coordination warehouse in Amman. The facility, showcased in live AFPTV images, is stocked with pallets of aid, highlighting the pressing need for assistance.
Sheri Ritsema-Anderson, the senior UN official in Jordan, described the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic” and “epic” during Blinken’s visit to the warehouse. With 15 years of experience in the Middle East, Ritsema-Anderson expressed the severity of the crisis, underscoring the immediate necessity for international efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Gazan population.
As the U.S. Secretary of State continues his regional tour, the international community closely watches for diplomatic developments aimed at bringing an end to the hostilities and providing much-needed relief to those affected by the conflict.
