Bauchi, Jan 20, 2026 (NAN) Animal Welfare Society of Nigeria (AWSON) on Tuesday, called for stronger public awareness and strict enforcement of existing animal welfare laws in Nigeria, to tackle animal cruelty.

Vice President of AWSON, Dr Shehu Zailani, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Bauchi.

Zailani, a veterinary expert and animal welfare advocate, expressed worry over the widespread mistreatment of animals, particularly during transportation.

‘’Animals are frequently subjected to cruelty and neglect, in spite of laws designed to protect them.

‘’AWSON is an inclusive organisation open to everyone, not only veterinarians or animal handlers; the society’s core mission is to educate the public on animal rights.

‘’Animals are living beings with the capacity to feel pain and stress; therefore, they deserve humane treatment similar to humans, ‘’ he said.

Zailani highlighted animal transportation as a major challenge, saying, ‘’Many animals are overcrowded in vehicles and transported under harsh conditions, especially when being conveyed to markets.’’he said

He warned that such practices exposed animals to extreme stress and injuries, with some dying before reaching their destinations due to  lack of veterinary supervision.

‘’AWSON has been engaging transport unions such as the National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW) as well as security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps.

“These engagements are aimed at educating officials, on animal welfare laws and empowering them to stop and sanction vehicles involved in animal abuse, ‘’ he said.

Zailani  also noted that improper animal transportation could lead to road accidents, explaining that overcrowding animals in unsuitable vehicles, increased safety risks on the highways.

According to him, while some animal owners understood proper handling, many lacked accesses to suitable transport, placing greater responsibility on transporters.

‘’AWSON is working with Fulani associations, including Miyetti Allah, to sensitise livestock owners on humane animal care, ‘’ he said.

He urged the public to recognise animal welfare as both a moral and religious obligation.

“Improving animal welfare enhances public safety, reduces suffering, and promotes ethical standards in society.’’(NAN)
