February 6, 2024: Top officers from various intelligence services in the country have revealed attempts by certain individuals to sow discord between Northern Senators in the 10th National Assembly (NASS) and the public. Speaking anonymously to PRNigeria, these officers disclosed that the agenda of these “unscrupulous elements” also includes inciting friction among the nation’s security agencies.
Their comments came in response to a newspaper report alleging the involvement of an influential Northern Senator in sponsoring terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping. According to the report, this lawmaker, who heads a crucial committee in the Senate, has been identified as a financier of such criminal activities in the Northern Region.
However, a high-ranking intelligence official dismissed the report as a “fabrication,” revealing that their investigation had uncovered the true instigators behind the story. He emphasised that no senator is currently under investigation for sponsoring terrorism or banditry.
Similarly, another senior military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that they had identified the mastermind behind the media report aimed at tarnishing the reputation of Northern Senators. He revealed that efforts are underway to uncover the individuals responsible for the sponsored negative campaign.
During their investigation, it was discovered that a retired security officer, still active in service, is the primary orchestrator of these allegations. This former security official hails from a state in the Middle Belt region. The authorities are actively pursuing leads to apprehend him and compel him to disclose the senator he is implicating.
The officers emphasised the importance of unity and solidarity among Nigerians, stressing that efforts to sow discord and division will not be tolerated. They reassured the public that security agencies are diligently working to address such malicious attempts and uphold national harmony.
