Lagos(Agege), Jan. 20, 2026 (NAN) The Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State on Monday,  launched a Solar Electrification Training and Renewable Energy Value Chain Development Programme.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the initiative, which began on Jan. 19,  will end on  Jan. 23.

The programmed targets youths interested in renewable energy, equipping them with vital skills to address Nigeria’s power challenges and promote sustainable growth.

Chairman of the council, Mr Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa said the programme reflected his administration’s commitment to sustainable development and youth empowerment through skills acquisition rather than short-term interventions.

“This programme is deliberately structured to give our youths practical, employable skills that can translate into jobs, entrepreneurship and long-term economic independence.

“Renewable energy is a growth sector, and we want youths in Agege  to be positioned as solution providers, not job seekers,” he said.

Obasa said that the first batch of 25 participants are undergoing intensive,  training combining classroom instruction with hands-on sessions.

He said that modules included solar power fundamentals, panel installation, system maintenance, safety procedures and an introduction to the renewable energy value chain.

According to Obasa, participants will be formally certified at the end of the programme to enhance their credibility and employability.

He said that he would personally present certificates to the trainees.

Obasa announced a second training batch from Feb. 16, to Feb. 20, part of a phased rollout to build skilled youths supporting local energy needs and driving grassroots economic growth.

One of the participants, Miss Bolade Ojo, a graduate of Physics,  said that it is a  life-changing opportunity that would  help her start a solar installation business.

Another participant,  Mr Bode Olabisi , an artisan, said: “This programme gives us hope and with the skills, I am learning, I can create jobs for myself and others.”

Mr Thomas Ajayi , an electrical engineering graduate, said:  “Renewable energy is the future and this training is positioning us to be part of that future.”

Mr Lekan Adefioye, a youth leader in the community, added: “The chairman’s involvement shows seriousness, we now believe our government is investing in us, not just giving handouts.”

Mr Ojo Adebowale, a resident,  commended the initiative, describing it as a sustainable response to youth unemployment and economic vulnerability. (NAN)
