North Korea’s defence chief has been executed by firing squad after falling asleep at an event attended by Kim Jong-Un, according to reports.

Defence Minister Hyon Yong Chol was charged with treason after having shown “disrespect” to Mr Kim at the military event.

The claims were made in a briefing by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service.

It said hundreds of officials watched the execution on 30 April.

According to media reports he was killed by anti-aircraft fire.

The news comes after South Korea’s spy agency said last month that Mr Kim ordered the execution of 15 senior officials this year as punishment for challenging his authority.
