The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) has fixed Aug. 8 for the conduct of the councillorship by-election in Obi Electoral Ward of Obi Local Government Area.

The Chairman of the commission, Barr. Ayuba Wandai, announced this at a press briefing on Wednesday in Lafia.

Wandai said that the by-election became necessary following the death of the councilor representing Obi Ward in the Obi Local Government Legislative Council.

He explained that the commission received official notification of the vacancy from the council and immediately commenced preparations to conduct the election in line with its constitutional mandate.

“I hereby give notice that the councillorship by-election for Obi Electoral Ward, Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, shall hold on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026,” he said.

The chairman said nomination papers for the election would be submitted at the commission’s headquarters, Democracy House, Shendam Road, Lafia.

He also announced the timetable for the exercise, saying party primaries and resolution of disputes arising from them would hold from July 15 to July 18.

According to him, the last day for submission of candidates by political parties is July 21, while campaigns will commence on July 23.

Wandai added that substitution of candidates, where necessary, would take place between Aug. 1 and Aug. 3, while the final list of nominated candidates would be published on Aug. 4.
He also said that official register of voters for the election would be displayed on Aug. 5, submission of party agent, Aug. 6, and election day Aug. 8.

He said the commission had also released the guidelines for the by-election and would distribute them to all participating political parties.

The NASIEC chairman urged political parties and other stakeholders to comply with the election guidelines and conduct themselves peacefully throughout the process.

He assured that the commission would remain impartial and provide a level playing field for all contestants.

“We will discharge our duties without fear or favour. We will also be fair to everyone and ensure that we create an atmosphere where everybody will feel safe to vote and be voted for,” he said.

In his remarks, Alhaji Danlami Musa, Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Nasarawa State and State Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), pledged the support of political parties to ensure a successful by-election.

Musa said the parties would comply with the election guidelines and work with the commission to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free exercise. (NAN).
