Awka, Feb. 20, 2026 (NAN) The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State Chapter, has called for full support for the Special Seats for Women Bill.
The Chairperson, NAWOJ in Anambra, Mrs Tochukwu Ifejirka, said in a statement issued in Awka on Friday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Special Seats Bill coded HB 1349/HB1383 seeks to increase women participation in governance through more representation in the National Assembly.
It wants to achieve that by creating 37 additional Senate Seats and 37 additional House of Representatives seats exclusively for women.
Ifejirka said that the move was in the spirit of solidarity with the Nigeria Women Solidarity March held on Monday, Feb. 16, at the National Assembly, Abuja.
She explained that the Special Seats Bill before the National Assembly “is not about privileges, entitlements or token but should be seen as even and fair inclusivity for women”.
She explained that the bill bothered on justice to correct historical imbalance female gender politically had undergone in the polity of the nation.
“The struggle for women’s political inclusion from national level requires deliberate engagement downward to the grassroots.
“The advocacy for Special Seats Bill represents a structural solution to years of systemic exclusion; hence, we are calling on all stakeholders to treat this effort with the urgency and all seriousness it deserves.
“Democracy can truly thrive only when all strata of the population is duly represented in both its political leadership and decision-making processes,” she said.
Ifejirka said that over the decades, Nigerian women had shown competence, resilience, and capacity across various sectors dominated by the male counterparts.
She said that women had continued to perform creditably in public service allotted to them and deserve to be seen in the political arena where such capacity representation had not reflected.
Ifejika appealed to Senators and federal lawmakers representing Anambra at the National Assembly to rise above stereotypes to vote in favour of the Bill. (NAN)
