The Nigeria Government has finally returned the £4.2 million looted funds by a former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori, to the state.

Recall that the amount was repatriated to Nigeria from the United Kingdom recently, and had generated controversy after the state demanded that the money ought to be returned to its point of origin where it was looted.
The Accountant General of the Federation, Mr. Ahmed Idris, had however clarified that such funds looted from the treasury of a state were always returned to the state, otherwise the states could sue the Federal Government to recover such funds.

Nigeria’s Attorney General of Federation, Abubakar Malami had argued that since the Delta government denied money was missing from its coffers during Ibori’s trial, the recovered loot should be used for Federal Government projects.
Malami had also argued that the money was recovered at the national level and not the sub-national level, making Nigeria the victim of the crime.
