Organisation gifts 300 widows, 10 orphans food items, scholarships

Channel for Widow Relief Initiative (CFWRI), a non-governmental organization (NGO), has donated food items and clothing to no fewer than 300 widows in Oyo State and neighbouring states.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that CFWRI also gave financial education support to 10 orphans.

The items were given to the beneficiaries during the 13th Ramadan and food distribution programme of CFWRI on Wednesday in Ibadan.

The CFWRI Executive Director, Alhaja Fadilah Balogun, said during the event that widows in Nigeria were suffering and passing through a lot of challenges in society.

According to Balogun, widows need assistance and should be properly cared for and not neglected in society.

The executive director, who said she lost her husband 22 years ago, added that God had been merciful to her through the support of her husband’s family and others.

She said that CFWRI currently has over 600 widows as members and that the organisation was able to assist 300 of them during the Ramadan period due to financial constraints.

Balogun also said that the items given to the beneficiaries were not from any government but from philanthropists in society and members of the board of directors of CFWRI.

She explained that both Muslims and Christians were beneficiaries of the items and appreciated the donors for their constant assistance.

Balogun appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to assist the organisation so that they would be able to assist more widows.

Also speaking, the CFWRI Chairman, Board of Directors, Alhaja Muslimat Salau, said that the distribution of the food items and clothing was to ameliorate the suffering of the widows.

Salau said that CFWRI also embarked on several empowerment programmes for widows and their children, such as fashion designing, catering, and the donation of working tools and school uniforms to widows’ children.

She said that CFWRI was yet to have its permanent site and appealed for financial support to enable the organization to carry out its activities of assisting widows.

A guest speaker at the event, Sheikh Habeebulah Buhari, advised the widows not to let the deaths of their husbands stop them from caring for and morally upbringing their children.

Buhari urged them not to listen to bad advice and to be closer to the family of their husbands.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Mulikat Tijani appreciated CFWRI for the gesture, saying the food items would go a long way in ameliorating their suffering. (NAN)
