Stakeholders advocate actions to promote gender equality, social justice

Some feminism advocates have expressed the need for more actions towards promoting gender equality and social justice in the society.

They spoke at a feminist convention with the theme: “Feminism: ‘No Ifs, No Buts’ Life and Times Of An Iconic Feminist” in Calabar on Thursday.

The event was used to celebrate the life and times of the late Prof. Bene Madunagu, who died on Nov. 26, 2024, at the age of 77.

It would be recalled that the late Madunagu was a Professor of Botany in the University of Calabar, and the first female ASUU chairman of the institution.

She was an active feminist, who played pivotal role in the formation of the Women in Nigeria (WIN), a feminist movement.

Speaking at the event, Faith Nwadishi, a Board of Trustee Member, Girls Child Initiative (GPI), said that promoting gender equality and social justice, would keep the memory of the late professor alive.

“We should all reflect on her passion for gender equality, let’s use the opportunity to share our experiences in the struggle for social justice..

“She was a revolutionary activist, scholar and feminist who was renowned for her activism on gender equality through her NGO, GPI.

“Let’s recommit ourselves to this struggle by working together to make the world a better place, particularly when it concerns the girl child,” she stated.

Also speaking, Mrs Ndodeye Bassey-Obongha stated that the late Madunagu’s efforts towards protecting the rights of the girl child would remain indelible

Bassey-Obongha who spoke during a session tagged: “The Bene I know: Her Theory and Practices as a feminist”, described her as fearless and courageous

“We live and drink what we learnt from Bene. She was fearless; she consciously created a system that will continue to strive,” she said.

Prof. Hauwa Biu, one of the panelists, said that the late professor of botany consciously preached resilience and courage as essential tools to build an extraordinary woman. (NAN)
