Mr Akinpelu Johnson, chairman, Alimosho Local Government of Lagos State  has urged residents to reject drug abuse as the world marks International Day Against Drug Abuse 2026.

Johnson said this in a goodwill message released on Friday through his media office to commemorate the annual observance, which is dedicated to raising awareness about drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that World Drug Day raises awareness about dangers of illicit drugs and reinforces global commitment to building a society free from drug abuse and trafficking.

Johnson described drug abuse as a destructive menace that had devastated countless lives, homes, businesses, and careers across communities.

“Today, and as always, I stand firmly against hard drug use because nothing good has ever come from it.

Drug abuse has destroyed many homes, businesses, and careers, draining investments, savings, and future prospects of countless individuals,” he added.

The chairman expressed concern over rising involvement of young people, especially secondary school students, in drug abuse across Lagos communities.

He noted that the spread of drug abuse among youths raised serious concerns about the future of society and national development.

Akinpelu reaffirmed government’s commitment to combating the menace, and commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for its remarkable work against traffickers.

He stated, “As a government, we are doing our best to fight this menace, and we will not relent in our efforts.”
