Convict bags 6 months imprisonment for stealing student’s phone

Ibadan, March 27, 2026 (NAN) An Iyaganku Çhief Magistrates’ court in Ibadan on Friday, sentenced a 32-year-old man, Ayo Adeleke, to six months imprisonment over burglary and stealing of two phones valued N1.1 million.

The defendant who was arraigned on charges bordering on burglary and stealing, had pleaded guilty to the charges.

Following his plea, the Magistrate, Mr M. Mudashiru, found him guilty as charged, and accordingly, convicted him.

The court sentenced the convict to a term of six months imprisonment at the Agodi Correctional centre in Ibadan.

The court, however, gave the convict an option of three months community service, with a condition that one of his parents stands as surety.

In the charge, the prosecutor, ASP Tunji Olaniyi, told the court that the convict committed the offence on Feb. 16, at about 5.00 a.m.

He said that the convict had broken the window of a house behind Red roof Hotel, Tollgate, Ibadan, and had stolen an iphone 15 pro valued one milion naira.

He also told the court that the convict also stole a techno pop android phone valued N160,000.

Both phones are said to be owned by one David Oriyomi, a student of Lead City University in Ibadan.

According to the prosecutor, the convict who boarded a tricycle, was then apprehended by the police during a stop and search on the road.

The prosecutor said that the convict failed to explain how he had both phones in his possession, and was consequently, arrested.

The offence contravenes the provisions of section 390 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State 2000.

Before sentence, the convict had in a plea for mercy, begged the court to temper justice with mercy.(NAN)
