Mr Olusegun Onilude, Chairman, Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos, on Wednesday urged the Federal and state governments to help it tackle major drainage works in the area.
Onilude, who made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry, said the assistance of governments would help to check flooding in the area.
He stressed that flooding had become perennial in Badagry, adding that the major drainages works in the area was beyond what the council alone could tackle.
“Ajara communities, Topo and Idale are usually flooded for days despite our using a pumping machine to control it.
“When we look at the magnitude of what should be done, we realised that it is beyond the council.
“But the Federal and Lagos State Governments should come to the council’s assistance.
“So, we have written to the appropriate quarters, and we are waiting for them to respond,” Onilude said.
He explained that the council authorities had warned residents against blocking drains in their areas.
The chairman said it had engaged in series of sensitization to warn the residents not to block the drains, so water could flow.
“Our people should be conscious of sanitation, so that we don’t compound our flooding challenges.
“The landlords should also build smaller drains in front of their houses, so that water will continue to flow.
“On our own, we are building drains on the roads so that the water from the smaller drains will gather with water from other drains and flow to the central drainage system,” he said.
The chairman said that the council had also commenced clearing of drainage channels in the area to ensure the free flow of water.
Onilude reiterated that the major drainage works in the area was beyond what the council alone could tackle. (NAN)
