New York, February 17, 2024 – In a landmark ruling on Friday, a New York judge instructed former United States President Donald Trump to pay $355 million over allegations of fraud, further delivering a blow by barring him from running companies in the state for three years.

Trump, the presumed Republican presidential nominee for the upcoming election, faced allegations of unlawfully inflating his wealth and manipulating property values to secure favourable bank loans or insurance terms.

Reacting to the ruling, Trump’s defence attorney, Alina Habba, denounced it as a “manifest injustice” and pledged to appeal the decision.

While the case was civil rather than criminal, Judge Arthur Engoron justified the hefty penalties, stating that Trump’s conduct warranted such repercussions.

Trump’s two sons, Eric and Donald Trump Jr., were also implicated in the case and ordered to pay over $4 million each. However, Don Jr. attributed the outcome to “political beliefs” on social media.

Additionally, Judge Engoron extended the authority of retired judge Barbara Jones to monitor Trump’s business affairs independently. He also mandated the appointment of an independent director of compliance to oversee the Trump Organisation.

The ruling marks a significant legal setback for Trump, who has faced a tumultuous week of legal proceedings, including a criminal trial in New York and accusations of conspiracy in Atlanta, Georgia.

Despite Trump’s vocal criticisms of New York State Attorney General Letitia James and Judge Engoron, the ruling represents a victory for the prosecution, which had sought substantial financial penalties and a ban on Trump conducting business in the state.

Trump’s legal challenges are far from over, with multiple trials pending across different jurisdictions, including allegations of sexual assault and defamation.

The ruling concludes a turbulent chapter for Trump, underscoring the legal scrutiny he faces as he navigates various legal battles while seeking to maintain his political influence.
